Car Battery Replacement

Statesboro’s One-Stop Shop for Car Battery Replacement

Your car’s battery is the powerhouse of your vehicle. No matter how much gas you put into your car, if your battery isn’t functioning, then you’re not moving. And like most batteries, eventually, you’re going to need to replace your automotive battery. Thankfully, proper care and scheduled vehicle maintenance checks can extend the life of your battery, but when your battery’s time is up, it’s time to start looking for a replacement.

Thankfully, at D & R Car Care, we’re happy to provide you with the assistance you need to get back on the road quickly!

Signs You Need To Replace Your Battery

When it’s time for your battery to be replaced, your car will begin to show signs. Most car batteries last anywhere from 3 to upwards of 6 years! By keeping an eye out for these signs, you won’t be caught by surprise and require roadside assistance to get you somewhere you can replace your battery.

Some signs you might want to start searching for a replacement battery include:

  • Sulfuric smell when you pop the hood
  • Dim headlights
  • Your engine is slow to start
  • You frequently need to jumpstart your vehicle
  • Your check engine light is on
  • You’ve had issues with electronic parts of your car (windows won’t work, dashboard malfunctions, cellphone isn’t charging)
  • Corrosion on connectors
  • Battery case shows signs of warping

While some of these signs imply issues with other aspects of your car, such as a bad alternator, noticing these might be a sign you should bring your car in for an inspection. During your inspection, an automotive technician will inspect different parts of your vehicle, including your battery, to determine whether or not your battery is showing signs of dying.

What Can Wear Out Your Battery?

While your car battery can last up to six years if properly maintained, a number of things can severely damage it and prompt you to require a replacement as soon as two years later. By taking steps to safeguard your battery, you can save yourself the stress of sudden battery failures and costly repairs.

Look out for behaviors that can damage your battery’s lifespan:

  • Leaving your headlights on while the car is off
  • Interior lights are left on, or your phone is left plugged in while the car is off
  • Loose or corroded connections due to lack of maintenance
  • You’re not driving your car or only taking short drives
  • Your alternator needs to be repaired, and you’ve held off on repairs
  • Severe weather conditions
  • Excess vibrations from driving fast over potholes or speed bumps

Types of Car Batteries

Nowadays, there are a number of different types of car batteries on the market. As it’s not recommended that you change the type of battery between replacements (as your car is optimized to the one that was installed in the factory), it’s worth knowing just what kind of battery powers your car.

Flooded Lead-Acid

The most common type of battery are the ones you’ll find in most older vehicles. The ubiquity of these batteries means they’re far more accessible to replace and lean towards the affordable range. However, due to their simplicity, they’re far more likely to be damaged and require consistent maintenance.

Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM)

Another type of lead-acid battery that evolves from the original design. These last for a long time but suffer the trade-off of being a more costly option to replace. These batteries are named for the glass mat within them that absorbs electrolytes, promising you little to no maintenance.

Gel Cell

Powered by a gel-like electrolyte, it is ideal for variable temperatures and rough riding, such as off-roading. It requires less maintenance than many other batteries and has a longer battery life than more common types of batteries. However, these batteries can be much more costly than other types.

Lithium-ion

The newest batteries on the market have improved upon past designs to offer a lightweight, high-energy battery. Lithium-ion batteries are more common in electric vehicles and have become far more popular recently. However, these are the most expensive type of battery and can also suffer from temperature issues—vastly decreasing longevity for those who live in hotter climates.
